125th anniversary service of the move of Emanuel School to Wandsworth

On Friday 16th May 2008 200 pupils, staff, governors, parents and OEs assembled in Chelsea Old Church for a Service of Thanksgiving to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the school's move to Wandsworth.

The Vicar welcomed us to "our home" (on the basis that this is the church in which Lord and Lady Dacre are buried) and then the service was conducted by The Reverend Paul Hunt.

During the service the Chairman of Governors, Francis Abbott, led a procession to the Dacre Tomb and flowers were laid.

The Headmaster gave a reading from Henry Maskell's book "Recollections of Emanuel School" which was published in 1904. Henry Maskell was son of J Maskell, the last Master of Emanuel in Westminster, who saw the move to Wandsworth at first hand.

There were also readings by Claude Scott, Micaela Wing and Helen Haddock.

The address was given by The Very Reverend John Hall, the Dean of Westminster. The Dean noted that, 125 years ago, his predecessor Dean Bradley had presided over the official opening of Emanuel School in June 1883 and so it was appropriate that he should be present in 2008.

The 50 strong choir sang magnificently and afterwards our school caterers provided a fine feast in the Petyt Hall for the guests. It was a wonderful occasion and we are already looking forward to the 150th celebrations!
