Timothy Walden: Principal Cello of Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Timothy Walden was born in London and began his cello studies at the age of eight with Leonard Stehn. In 1980 he continued to study with Stehn at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

After leaving college, conductor Neemi Jarvi appointed Timothy as Principal Cellist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, becoming the youngest Principal Cellist in the UK at the age of 21.

Since then, Timothy has been Principal Cellist of numerous orchestras in the UK and Europe, such as Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestre Nationale de Capitol de Toulouse.

Timothy has also been regularly invited as Guest Principal to the English Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (Sweden), Scottish Chamber Orchestra working with eminent conductors, such as Sir Georg Solti, Sir Simon Rattle, Valerie Gergiev, Yuri Termikanov, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez.

As a soloist, Timothy has performed and recorded extensively with all the major orchestras in Britain for disc, BBC, ABC, German, French and Czech radio.

As a chamber musician, Timothy has been much in demand throughout the UK and Europe. He has performed with ensembles such as the Allegri String Quartet, Soloists of the English Chamber Orchestra and Academy of St Martins-in-the-Field and now the Sydney Soloists.

In January 2009, Timothy has started his new appointment as Principal Cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He is also teaching at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne University.
