Henley 1966 - 2006 This world famous annual regatta took place between 28th June - 1st July 2006. Emanuel School has always been a prominent rowing school at Henley, producing many fine crews, the most famous of which were the winners of the Princess Elizabeth trophy in 1966, an extraordinary feat for a school team and still widely admired in rowing circles. This year, to mark 40 years since this remarkable achievement, the 1966 crew was honoured by the stewards with a row-pass over the course. This is a very rare event and a great privilege for the Emanuel crew.
The team: Jonathan Hawkesley, Dickie Clarke, Iain Reid, Nicola Tee, John Neale, Peter Twyman, Jerry Dale, James Davis, Stephen Rimmer. For more information please use this link to the dedicated web site Marion Parsons, Governor of Emanuel writes During the last Sunday of Henley Royal Regatta the Headmaster, Mark Hanley-Browne, and I witnessed the re-run of a very special event which took place forty years ago. Back in 1966, two years after the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup for Eights (the P.E. to the cognoscenti) was opened to rowers from schools other than public schools, a team from Emanuel beat all the opposition and created a record that will probably never be beaten. Forty years on this same crew, a wonderful advertisement for the true benefits of exercise, together with their cox, coach and the boatman gathered with their wives and families to commemorate this magnificent achievement. The crew had been asked to give a special ‘row past’ at 1 p.m. and so, after much excitement, reminiscences and preparation, the eight OEs donned their black sweatshirts and entered the boat tent for this special occasion. Once on the river they performed a stately and dignified row to rousing cheers and appreciative applause from the stands. It was a wonderful moment. It was, of course, these former pupils who helped create the image of Emanuel as a ‘rowing school’ and now, forty years on, we look forward to repeating their achievement in the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley in the not too distant future. |
